Cosmo and Cali...best friends

have these two got the life or what...daily long walks on trails and dog park trips, good food, treats and comfortable places to hang out on(no wonder my vet wants to come back as one of my dogs).

Well, for me , Fall season has officially begun...looks like cool weather finally...it's raining now as a truck backs in to my driveway and delivers my firewood....hubby not to happy about stacking it in the rain but will appreciate it tonite as we sit by ourfireplace with our coffee and dogs around it. I tried lighting a fire one day last week but only had a couple of logs left over. I wanted to introduce my 16 month old puppies to a fireplace...the golden, Cosmo, was afraid of it and headed for the couch. Cali, my chocolate lab/springer was indifferent....funny, all my other dogs in the past loved it, which brings to mind a funny story....Years ago, my first golden, Max and I were sitting on the floor in front of my fireplace. It was pouring, rain, the kids and husband were at work and school, just the two of us with my coffee, book and Max with his favorite toy enjoying the warmth of our fire. I decided to put a third log on but soon discovered that wasn't a good idea..the fire began to build to the point that the tops ofthe flames couldn't be seen, shooting up the chimney....the wall above the hearth began to turn black...As I scampered to the kitchen for some baking soda(great for quelching fires), Max headed for the front door because the heat was so tremendous, you could hardly get near it. Returning with a small box of soda which didn't do much, I tried to get close enough to poke the logs around to disperse the flames which, short of a 911 call , began to work....lesson learnedhere....if more is good...less is better...

One of the great rewards of a large garden is never having to buy flowers....I shop from my own yard....the front yard has many types of greenery which I add to my bouquets.

Gardening started back with the purchase of my first house plant for our apt. in our early days of marriage..In short of a year , that grew to 86 plants.Yes, a 2 bedrm. apt. with 86 houseplants. It looked like a jungle and I LOVED it....even had a bird to complete the look. When we moved into our home we got our first dog(like 3 days later).A springer spaniel we named Rusty, joined our family. It was during this time that I discovered that planting a garden and having a dog poses a few problems...digging,trampling,peeing, just to name a few.I bought a large pot and salvaged some of my new plants. It worked beautifully.Rusty left it alone and it filled out nicely. I began to add more pots slowly over time. Nice thing about container gardening...almost no weeding(YEH!) and you don't have to work the soil.Years and dogs later my garden developed into what it is today... a collection of over 200 pots with some plants (roses and large shrubs) in the ground.Soon birds, bees and butterflies started to arrive. Up went the bird feeders... T o bring in nature, you have to provide them places to hide(large shrubs ,trees, a variety of flowers they like, and most important , water. A fountain of moving water will attract birds like a magnet. I have 3, two of which I simply made.The view out my large bedroom window is amazing.... a mass of activity...birds of different types, occasional butterflies, bees, even a squirrel( what a surprise that was). Hummingbirds being my favorite, I have feeders for them all over the yard and they are around them all day til dark. When it rains, it is a sea of hummers, counting 27 around 2 feeders at one time. If you get into feeding them make your own food...it's cheaper and easy. To one cup of boiled water, add a quarter cup of sugar(I make mine a little stronger, they love it). Let it cool and fill your feeder...then wait for the show...be patient....it may take a few days for them to discover it. Keep the feeders clean and put fresh nectar in every 4-5 days. I have to fill at least one of them every day so I make upa large batch and store in the fridge.(should have seen the look on my husband's face when he thought he was drinking water) should of had my camera....well, maybe not... As all gardeners know, your garden is never done...always changing...which makes it fun...Fall is when most of the work starts, trimming back plants, and getting ready for new ones....Most of my extra money goes into my garden........and bird seed.... which explains why I own only 7 pairs of shoes and my clothes fit nicely into a six foot only closet.California has me spoiled...gardening YEAR round

I bought a praying mantis egg sac for my garden in hopes of the offspring would rid my garden of grasshoppers...each sac is suppose to carry up to 200 eggs...didn't know that but I only saw 4 of them and only 1 grasshopper, which landed in my hair while I was watering...my screams could be heard down the block. They are kind of fascinating, the way they turn their head to look at you. I hope one of them laid an egg sac for this year...time will tell.

Cosmo and Cali's Garden?!

This is a picture of my garden...well now its their garden. We had to fence in all my garden temporarily until they got older because they ate EVERYTHING in SIGHT! They are now 15 months old, and the fences are finally down. Now I have the joy of trimming everything back down to normal size.

Introducing Cali & Cosmo!

Cali is a Chocolate Lab..Cosmo is a golden retriever. In this picture, they are 4 months old. It was my idea to raise 2 puppies at the same time...Was it a good idea?? NO! They get in a lot of trouble...Have to be watched constantly.

We don't bother with a paper shredder in our house...Cosmo and Cali are our shredders!!! Pretty good job huh??

This is my first post. You probably thought there wasn't going to be any...so did I. That's because I'm new at this...my dear friend got me started on this and though her blog is quite nice,she knows what she is doing and I don't...but just wanted to get this started so you will know that I do exist...I'm winging this...pictures will be included in my blog just as soon as my friend COMES OVER and helps me. We are experiencing a TERRIBLE heat wave and no one wants to go outside. I have to go outside just to keep my gardens alive...I should have planted all cactus but I love flowers and this weather is unusual for us. My yard which is usually bustling with bird activity , is pretty quiet...too hot...but this will pass .My hummingbirds are choosing to feed in the early a.m. and p.m. My dogs are living the life in my 77 degree house....so hang in there...hope to have some photos up soon.
